Sulfoethylation of D-Xylans in heterogeneous phase

Abstract:  D-Xylans isolated from hornbeamwood and corn cobs have been alkylated in isopropyl alcohol using vinylsulfonic acid after activation with ammonia and 1-chloroethanesulfonic acid after alkalization with con­centrated aqueous sodium hydroxide solutions, and also the influence of reaction conditions (temperature, reaction time, amount of alkylating agent) on the yield and DS of the sulfoethylated polysaccharide was studied. The first method offered higher DS values at milder reaction conditions. The distribution of substituents is more important for water solubility of sulfo­ethylated xylans than the reached DS, the activation of the polysaccharide with liquid ammonia being the most effective.
