Abstract: The assocn. of manganese(II) ions with oxalate, malonate, and succinate ions was studied as a two-step equil. process. The 1st step corresponds to Mn(II)aq + Laq2- = Mn(H2O)Laq (K1) and the 2nd one to Mn(H2O)Laq = MnLaq (K2). In all 3 cases, values of the equil. consts. K1 and K2 were detd. at 25° using ESR from the dependence of the signal intensity of Mn(II) ions on the concn. of the carboxylate ions. The assocn. consts. of the ion pairs decrease in the series oxalate < malonate < succinate, analogous to a decrease of the hydration entropy of the corresponding inner-sphere complexes.
