Abstract: The reactions of Cu2(cres)4(H2O)3 (cres = 0-cresotate) with N-ligands of the pyridine and aniline type in EtOH, Me2CO, or C6H6, at room temp. and at the b.p. of the solvent, were described. Compds. of the type Cu(cres)2L2 (L = pyridine, α-, β-, γ-picoline, 2,4-, 2,6-lutidine, 2,4,6-collidine, quinoline, isoquinoline, PhNH2, and o-, m-, p-toluidine) were prepd. Rose-violet Cu(cres)2L2, L = β-picoline, was isolated from C6H6; in EtOH the complex was blue. Both show a pronounced difference in x-ray powder patterns. The β-picoline complex crystallizes from the C6H6 soln. with 2 mols. of solvated C6H6. The heterogenonous reactions of Cu2(cres)4(H2O)3 or Cu(cres)2(py)2 with pyridine vapor produce the unstable higher coordination no. complex, Cu(cres)2py3, which gradually liberates a part of the bound pyridine to form Cu(cres)2(py)2. Similar reactions occurred with vapors of β-picoline or γ-picoline, but α-picoline did not react further.
