Isomersion of copper complexes

Abstract: The prepn. and properties of α- and β-isomers of CuX2(NH3)2 (I) (X = Cl, Br) are reviewed and discussed from the point of view of recent theories of Cu complexes. The problem of cis-trans isomerism with Cu(II) complexes is discussed. The different properties of α- and β-isomers of I have their origin in the different distortion of the octahedral 3-dimensional structure in the solid state. The occurrence of so-called transient structures which are formed when isomers of I are prepd. is a consequence of low energy difference between both distorted structures. The mechanisms of substitution reactions of Cu(II) complexes are also discussed. 29 references.
