Chromatographic study of antibiotics produced by strains of the species Aspergillus fumigatus

Abstract: 21 strains of Aspergillus fumigatus FRES. were studied for their ability to produce antibiotics. Antibiotics were classified into the classes and subclasses by means of the paper chromatographic method used for a systematic analysis of antibiotics. The strains were of different origin and their abilities to produce antibiotics were very heterogenous. 72 substances possessing mainly antibacterial activity were found. Many of them were chromatographically identical. Some strains produced antibiotics which were found only in the cultivation media. Other strains produced antibiotics which were found both in their mycelia and cultivation media. However, the majority of strains produced antibiotics which remained in their mycelia and were not excreted into the cultivation media. The production of antibiotics chromatographically related to spinulosin (Va subclass according to the Ref. 1), gliotoxin (Vb subclass) and helvolic acid (Vc subclass) was established. The mentioned antibiotics are known to be metabolites of Aspergillus fumigatus FRES. Other antibiotics with a different chromatographic classification were also found, but they were not studied in more detail.
