Simultaneous preparation of 4,6-dinitro-3-methylphenol and 2,4-dinitro-3-methylphenol

Abstract: It was detd. that the nitration of 4-nitro-3-methylphenol forms not only 4,6-dinitro-3-methylphenol (I) but also 2,4-dinitro-3-methylphenol (II). On the basis that I, m. 74°, is sol. in cold C₆H₆ and II, m. 133°, is sol. in boiling C₆H₆ and very slightly sol. in cold C₆H₆, I and II were sepd. and isolated.
