The preparation of alkyl esters of cis,cis-Δ^9,12-octadecadienoic acid and cis,cis,cis-Δ^9,12,15-octadecatrienoic acid. I

Abstract: The prepn. of alkyl esters: Me (I), Et (II) and iso-Pr (III), of cis,cis-Δ9,12-octadecadienoic acid (IIIa) and Me (IV), Et (V), Pr (VI) and Bu (VII) of cis,cis,cisΔ9,12,15-octadecatrienoic acid (VIII) by debromination of tetrabromostearic acid (m. 114.7°) and of hexabromostearic acid (m. 181.5°) with Zn in MeOH, EtOH, PrOH, iso-PrOH, and BuOH was described. The esters were evaluated by sepn. paper chromatography and their Rf values were calcd. Infrared absorption spectra indicate that the position of characteristic bands is in all cases the same. B.p.0 (mm.) and Rf are: I, 172 (2.5), 0.710; II, 176 (2.5), 0.420; III, 179 (2.5), 0.360; IV, 173 (2.8), 0.520; V, 175 (2.5), 0.525; VI, 181 (2.5), 0.435; and VII, 190 (3.1), 0.425.
