Determination of the volume of hydrated particles in suspensions by the modified indicator method

Abstract: A modification of the 'indicator' method (Dumanskǐi, Kolloidy v pishchevǒi promyshlenosti, Moscow, 1949) for the detn. of the vol. of the hydrated particles in suspension and the amt. of the adsorbed H2O is described. The basis of this method is that the dipole-oriented H2O mols. of hydrated layers of particles lose their function as a solvent and the adsorbed H2O does not take part in dissolving any matter in the suspension. To the known vol. of this dispersion system a definite amt. of the indicator is added. From the change in concn. as compared with the theoretical concn., the vol. of hydrated particles and the amt. of adsorbed H2O are calcd. Expts. were carried out on colloid coagulates pptd. with lime from beet sugar juice. S2O3--, Cl-, and I- were investigated as indicators. S2O3-- and esp. Cl- were fully suitable for the new modified method but could not be used with the original D. method. I- was not suitable for either method because of its great adsorption on muddy particles.
