The pyrolysis of ethanol and dimethyl ether at 1200–1700 K and 0.20–0.25 MPa was studied inside a shock tube. A gas chromatograph was used to detect four pyrolysis products such as methane, acetylene, ethylene and formaldehyde. Based on Mittal and Kaiser mechanism, a detailed combination reduced mechanism (DME-Ethanol mechanism) was established by using directed relation graph method. Based on the reduced mechanism of DME-Ethanol, the ROP (Rate of Production) and sensitivity analysis of dimethyl ether and ethanol were carried out. The comparative analysis showed that the main products in the pyrolysis of ethanol and dimethyl ether were ethylene and methane, respectively. Ethanol and dimethyl ether are mainly consumed by hydrogen abstraction reactions initiated by H and CH3. The unique symmetrical structure of dimethyl ether makes the consumption ratio of dimethyl ether through unimolecular decomposition reaction larger than that of ethanol.
