Abstract:

A new mixed-ligand oxidovanadium (IV) complex, [VO(DFX)(1,10-phen)], in which DFX = Deferasirox and 1,10-phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, was synthesized using the reflux method and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV–Vis spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). Distorted octahedral geometry is suggested for the complex. The DFX ligand is coordinated to the central atom by two phenolate oxygen atoms and one triazole nitrogen atom. Two nitrogen atoms of the 1,10-phen ligand and the oxo group occupy three other positions around the central atom. The in vitro antibacterial activity of the synthesized complex, metal precursor (VO(acac)2) and parent ligands was evaluated against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterial strains. Furthermore, the antibiofilm activity of these compounds was investigated against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa bacteria. Based on the obtained results, the [VO(DFX)(1,10-phen)] complex exhibited higher antibacterial and antibiofilm activities in comparison to VO(acac)2, DFX and 1,10-phen.
