Graphene Oxide-coated interdigitated electrode for selective detection of mercury ions using self-assembled monolayer of mercaptosuccinic acid

Abstract:

Pollutants and heavy metal ions (HMIs) are the two contaminants in drinking water. HMI pollution in natural aquatic environments concerns human and ecological health. Existing HMI detection devices available in the market are bulky, expensive, and require a trained person. In this work, we have developed a miniaturized chemiresistive Interdigitated Electrode (IDE)-based sensor for detecting heavy metal ions. Compared with other sensors, chemiresistive sensors are simple and inexpensive, with high noise immunity and frequency independence. Herein, Graphene oxide-coated IDE with mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA) as a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) cross-linked with Pyridine carboxylic acid (PDCA) detects Hg2+ in water, impacting human health. The proposed chemiresistive sensor uses a graphene oxide layer that converts an open IDE into a resistor based on the concentration of mercury ions in water. The sensor demonstrates a considerable progressive link between sensor resistance variations and mercury ion concentration. The suggested sensor technology has a detection limit of 1.52 parts per billion (ppb) with dynamic range from 0.01 ppb to 100 ppb and provides a low-cost, user-friendly option for water quality monitoring.
