Abstract: Gossypol, a yellow-coloured matter, is originated from cotyledon during the germination stage of the seed of the cotton plant. Due to its various toxic effects in humans, it is essential to extract it from cottonseed oil. Neoteric solvents for extraction with tuneable properties have shown excellent efficiency in extracting such pollutants. Due to the large number of such solvents, a-priori screening strategy is adopted to sort and pick a set of solvents which can effectively extract gossypol from cottonseed oil. This screening technique makes use of a conductor-like screening model segment activity coefficient (COSMO-SAC) to select the neoteric solvents for extraction purposes. The neoteric solvents considered in this work are 217 types of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) and 2262 types of ionic liquids (ILs). The COSMO-SAC model aims at the calculation of the infinite dilution activity coefficient. A mathematical equation is further used to calculate the solubility of gossypol in oil and the extraction solvents. The solubility values are finally used to narrow down from a vast pool of extraction solvents to fewer numbers.
