Abstract:
Interest in the use of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for pollutant sequestration from aqueous media has grown in recent years due to MOFs’ very desirable properties, such as eco-friendliness, large surface area and pore volume, hierarchical structures, and property tunability. This article provides a critical and complete evaluation of current advancements in the synthesis and application of MOF-based adsorbents for dye sequestration. Dyes are difficult to remove using traditional wastewater treatment processes because they are light, heat, and oxidizing agent stable. Although many strategies have been developed to discover an economical and effective solution to handle polluted effluent from the dying industry, yet this article provides an overview of MOFs, their use for dye removal, and numerous obstacles and prospects. A thorough review of the literature revealed that changing the pore size and pore volume could enhance the removal efficiency of MOFs. Thus, this study examines the major synthesis pathways for producing MOF-based adsorbents, as well as the important features of MOFs that give them an edge over traditional adsorbents. Furthermore, the mechanism of interaction between MOFs and pollutants in solution was investigated, as well as the parametric influence of operational factors on MOF performance. Some present issues with the utilization of MOFs were discussed, as well as the future prospects of this unique adsorbent.
