Preliminary Study of Sulfonation of Polystyrene by Homogeneous and Heterogeneous Reaction

Abstract: The experimental details of homogeneous sulfonation of polystyrene in solution of dichloroethane using acetyl sulfate as sulfonating agent were summarized in this work. The effect of H₂SO₄ concentration on the sulfonation yield was analyzed for homogeneous sulfonation. Two samples of polystyrene-sulfonated beads were prepared in a heterogeneous reaction and analyzed.
