Esterification of polyacrylic acid bonded to polypropylene by alcohol

Abstract: By means of an exptl. design, the conditions for the optimal p-toluenesulfonic acid  catalyzed esterification of acrylic acid-propene graft copolymer  by BuOH were detd. It was not possible to obtain a polymer with >50% esterified polyacid, which is explained by mutual interaction of CO2H groups. The apparent rate const. of esterification, k = 4.8 x 10-6 dm3 mol-1s-1, was detd. at 120° in the presence of 20 mol % of the catalyst (based on the acidic groups). This rate const. has a lower value than the rate const. for the esterification of low-mol.-wt. carboxylic acids by alcs. in homogenation conditions.
