Abstract: Results reported in this paper concern the solving of the crystal structure of
α-[Cu(bpy)2NCSe]NCSe. The structural unit consists of a complex cation and
a selenocyanate anion. Coordination polyhedron of the central atom is trigonal
bipyramidal in shape, with a square-pyramidal distortion. The selenocyanate
group is coordinated as a unidentate ligand through the nitrogen atom in the
equatorial plane of the coordination polyhedron. In the complex under
investigation, existence of two different kinds of selenocyanate groups has also
been proved by means of infrared spectra. The distortion of the trigonal
bipyramidal coordination polyhedron of the Cu(II) central atom has also been
registered as a splitting of ligand field absorption bands. This result confirms
a suggestion about a possible correlation between the type of coordination
polyhedra of Cu(II) and the shape of ligand field band in electronic absorption
spectra. Two different forms of the above-mentioned compound have been
prepared under various conditions of preparation. They are preliminarily
regarded as distortion isomers which are intermediates between a trigonal
bipyramid and a tetragonal pyramid.
