Abstract: The amount of phenol forming in the oxidation of cumene in the liquid phase
initiated by halides increases with reaction temperature, oxygen pressure, and
hydrogen bromide concentration. An addition of pyridine in the reaction
system causes a decrease in the amount of the forming phenol which is likely to
be a result of the formation of adducts with active bromine atoms. The reaction
is poorly selective, and cumyl alcohol and acetophenone are formed as further
main products.
