Axial versus equatorial metal-ligand distances in transition metal compounds. I. Hexafluoro complexes

Abstract: X-ray structural data of the 1st-row transition metal hexafluorides were analyzed. Mean equatorial, Re, and mean axial, Ra, metal-ligand distances exhibit an Ra vs. Re correlation realized in the fact that with increasing Ra the distance Re decreases and vice versa. The studied complexes cover elongated and compressed tetragonal bipyramids having in their octahedral configuration 3 classes of electronic ground states.
