Abstract: The effect of irradn. of poly(vinyl alc.) (I) by a high-pressure Hg lamp in the absence or presence of terephthalaldehyde (II) was detd. Crosslinking was studied by detg. the gel content, viscosity of sol. fraction, and kinetics of formation of the swollen surface layer in H2O. II was a crosslinking agent and a sensitizer of crosslinking, as confirmed by viscometry and spectrometry. Changes were most marked in the 1st stage of irradn. The kinetics of swollen surface layer formation were used to det. apparent mean diffusion coeffs., which varied from 1.7 × 10-11 to 3.1 × 10-10 m2/s and decreased with increasing II content and irradn. The activation energy of diffusion of H2O into I increased with increasing II content and irradn. from 76 to 105 kJ mol-1.
