Thermodynamic analysis of the phase diagram of the sodium-mercury system in the region of diluted amalgams

Abstract: On the basis of literature data, a thermodn. anal. was made of the liquidus curves in the system Na-Hg in the region of dild. liq. amalgams. In the region of solidification of pure mercury, the exptl. data lack accuracy, their position, however, points to the possibility of the existence of NaHg6 or NaHg16 in the very dil. amalgams. Between the eutectic (-48°) and the peritectic (157°) points, all exptl. data - when plotted as logxNaHg4 vs. 1/T - lie in two almost linear regions; consequently, two different intermetallic compds. may be supposed to coexist here with satd amalgams. Unfortunately, there is poor agreement among the exptl. data reported by individual authors.
