Abstract: The influence of acetone, O, and of chlorides on the oxidn. of Fe(II) to Fe(III) for the systems Fe(II)-Cl--O2-acetone-methanol was studied. Acetone and O have an oxidizing effect on Fe(II). For a high acetone content, the O effect is negligible. The rate of the redox process decreases in systems with excess Cl-, due to the formation of [FeCl4]2- which are comparatively stable against redox changes. The O contribution to the oxidn. of Fe(II) in these systems is more pronounced; the oxidn. rate of Fe(II) to Fe(III) is greater for a lower acetone content than in systems of lower Cl- concn. Complexes that undergo redox processes are those with a heterogeneous coordination sphere; likewise, the redox behavior of complexes is conditioned by the formation of σ donor and σ donor and π receptor systems in the coordination sphere. The function of the chloro ligand in the oxidn. mechanism of Fe(II) by acetone was verified. The function of O as a ligand in the oxidn. mechanism of Fe(II) as well as the products of its redn. were not investigated in detail.
