Reactions of saccharides catalyzed by molybdate ions. XIII. Preparation of D-allose and D-altrose and their epimerization

Abstract:  Epimeric aldoses were prepared by oxidative decomposition of a mixture of sodium salts of nitrohexitols obtained from D-ribose. Allose or altrose epimerize in acidic water solution under catalytic action of molybdate ions giving an equilibrium mixture of allose and altrose in the ratio 3 : 2. From the equilibrium mixture of epimeric aldoses, allose can simply be isolated by crystallization.
