Conformational and configurational studies on diastereoisomeric methyl (methyl 3,4-O-benzylidene-α- and -β-D-galactopyranosid)uronates

Abstract: Proton magnetic resonance and circular dichroism spectra for two pairs of diastereoisomeric methyl (methyl 3,4-O-benzylidene-a- and -ß-D-galactopyranosid)uronates and carbon magnetic resonance spectra for the dia­stereoisomeric title a anomers were measured. From the p.m.r. coupling constants, chemical shifts, and Cotton effects conformation and configura­tion for the compounds under investigation was determined. The possibility of the deformation of the tetrahydropyran ring containing a dioxolane fused ring is also discussed.
