Cyclic voltammetry of germanium dioxide in molten borax

Abstract: Using the method of cyclic voltammetry, the system Na2B4O7-GeO2 (1.0 mole %) was studied at 800°C. The reaction Ge4+ + 4e ⇌ Ge0 is reversible and the reaction product can be regarded as sol. A simple criterion of the reversibility of the electrode reaction was used. The criterion is independent of the no. of the exchanged electrons and of temp. It was verified using literature data reported for 300°C and confirmed exptl. at 800°C.
