Abstract: 3-Aryloxymethylenephthalides and 3-arylthiomethylenephthalides were prepared from phthalic anhydride and aryloxy- or (arylthio)acetic acids by the Gabriel modification of the Perkin synthesis [1]. Rearrangement of these phthalides led to 2-arylthio- 1,3-indandiones and to 2-aryloxy-1,3-indandiones, which afforded bis(2-aryloxy-1,3-indandiones).
