Abstract: The reaction between β-resorcylidenethiosemicarbazone and nickel(II)
salts in acidic medium was studied. The green, water insoluble nickel(II)
salt of molecular formula (C8H8N302S)2Ni • 6H2O was isolated and analysed.
It was found to be suitable for gravimetric determination of nickel.
By the solubility determination of the salt at various pH it has been
ascertained that at optimum pH conditions 5 — 6.5 and 20°C nickel can be
determined in 0.1 — 0.5 mg/ml concentration. The determination with 5X10-2м solution of the reagent in acetone is not disturbed by the presence
of alkali metals or alkaline earth cations such as NH4+, Tl+, Be2+, Mg2+,
Mn(II), Zn(II), B(III), Cr(III), As(III, V), Bi(III) and Th(IV). The presence
of Al(III) and Sb(III) is masked with sodium potassium tartrate. Ti(IV) and
Zr(IV) is masked with NaF. The conversion ratio is 0.1000 and the determination
error was found to be less than ± 0.5%.
