Abstract: An acidic polysaccharide contg. D-glucuronic acid, 4-O-methyl-D-glucuronic acid, D-galactose, D-mannose, L-arabinose, and D-xylose was isolated from the cherry-tree gum (P. avium var duracina). Degraded polysaccharide was obtained in addn. to L-arabinose, D-xylose, and D-galactose on hydrolysis. The polysaccharide was subjected to acid hydrolysis and products obtained were sepd. by paper chromatog. and identified. Both original and degraded polysaccharide were oxidized with periodate and the degraded polysaccharide was methylated. The main chain is believed to be composed of D-galactose residues: →6)-β-D-Galp-(1→6)β-Galp-(1→to which D-glucuronic acid is attached at C-6 position. The side chains are formed by D-xylose, D-galactose, L-arabinose, and 4-O-methyl-D-glucuronic acid, resp.
