Spectrophotometric determination of acetyl groups in o-acetyl derivatives of sugars

Abstract: The method of determination of acetyl groups is based upon the reaction of hydroxylamine with О-acetyl derivatives of saccharides and the spectrophotometric estimation of the coloured iron(III) complex of acetylhydroxamic acid thus formed. This method is quite simple, sufficiently sensitive and the amount of saccharide needed for this determination corresponds to 1 — 3 mg of acetyl group. When determining 3 mg of the acetyl group, the probable error is 0.6 %, eventually the maximum random error 2.1 %.
