Abstract: Some problems of the electrolytic production of Al were studied. The effects of the structure of pure cryolite melt, the reactions occurring at the electrodes, the equil. potentials on the cathode between metallic Na and Al in the melt, and the secondary reactions at the anode responsible for decreased current efficiency during of Al production are described. The revised phase diagram of Na3AlF6-Al2O3 and the phase diagram of the ternary reciprocal system NaF-AlF3-Al2O3-Na2O are presented. The max. soly. of Al2O3 960-1000° was at the ratio of NaF:AlF3 of 3:1. The effects of addns. of LiF, NaF, BeF2, MgF2, CaF2, BaF2, AlF3, NaCl, and BaCl2 were detd.
