Abstract: An app. with a practically open circuit to study the electrode processes in cryolite melts (93.75% Na3AlF6 and 6.25% Al2O3) by the potential-time curve method is described. Pt electrodes polarized with a short-time pulse were applied. The time dependence of the potential of the neg. Pt electrode as compared with the standard electrode was carried out by the electron oscillograph and recorded photographically. On the potential-time curve, 4 horizontal arrests were distinctly recorded. The potentials of these do not depend on the surface area ratio of the anodically and cathodically polarized electrodes, on the distance of the electrode, or on the type of polarization. The optimum pulse duration was 0.9-1.5 sec. If the pulse duration is kept within this interval, the reproducibility of all 4 arrests is good.
