Influence of the resolving power of photographic material on the practically attainable detection power in spectrochemical analysis

Abstract: A method suitable for estimation of resolving power of spectral apparatuses is described.
The resolution of five types of photographic materials used in the spectrography was
determined. It was found that the resolution of the spectrograph ISP-51 depends on
the photographic materials used. On the basis of investigations of relations between the
spectral line intensity and the continuous spectrum, when different photographic materials
are used, it has been found that it is possible to use spectrograph slits broader
than normal, without bringing about deterioration of the relation between the spectral
line intensity and the continuous background; consequently the absolute detection
power of the spec trochemical analysis can be improved. Dependence of the intensity of the
spectral line and of the continuous background on the slit width was also studied at
different focal distances of the spectrograph camera.
