Production of uniform metal films for measuring soft β-rays from tin-121

Abstract: A method for the prepn. of thin uniform Sn films for measuring soft β-rays of 121Sn with a min. self-absorption is described; 0.7-1.0 g. Sn is irradiated, dissolved in concd. HCl, and made up into soln. contg. 10 mg. Sn/ml. By treating with 1.3M NaBH₄ in 0.2N NaOH, volatile SnH₄ is formed which, after purification, is introduced into decompn. device. Sn is deposited on the quartz glass disk, and its yield is detd. by weighing and measuring of the soft β-rays with the max. energy 0.38 Mev. The films were of uniform thickness with the surface d. 1 mg./cm²
