Abstract: From the preparative point of view, study of Cu(II) reactions with ethylenediamine
in solutions in the presence of acid residues of calicylic acid resulted in the
isolation of bis(ethylenediamine)copper(H)salicylate monohydrate and bis(salicylato)
ethylenediaminecopper(II) complex, depending on the molecular ratio of the
reactants. The former was also obtained by the heterogeneous reaction course of
diaquobis(salicylato)copper(II) complex dihydrate, bis(salicylato)dipyridinecopper(II)
complex and bis(salicylato)ethylenediaminecopper(H) complex, respectively, with
ethylene diamine vapours (from 67% aqueous solution).
Systems: copper(II) ions—salicylate ions—ethylenediamine (in excess) were investigated
by electrophoresis and spectrophotometrically, and in the alkaline pH
range, likewise in the aqueous solution of bis (ethylenediamine) copper (II) salicylate
a bis(ethylenediamine)copper(II) ion was identified. It is to be assumed that even
in the isolated bis (ethylenediamine) copper (II) salicylate monohydrate the salicylate
ions do not participate in the process of formation of the inner sphere of Cu(II)
atoms (limited by the usual coordination number 4). On the other hand, in systems
with equimolecular ratio of Cu(II) and ethylenediamine (in the acidic pH range) the
electrophoretic mobility of Cu(II) ions and its light absorption in the visible part
of spectrum are substantially influenced in the presence of salicylate ions. Under
the above mentioned reaction conditions it shows an interaction of both ligands with
Cu(II) at the same time and it also supports the concept of heterogeneous inner shell
in the isolated bis(salicylato)ethylenediaminecopper(II) complex
