Abstract: The methylation of 6-O-(β-D-glucuronopyranosyl)-D-galactose (I), 6-O-(4-O-methyl-β-D-glucuronopyranosyl)-D-galactose (II) and 2-O-(β-D-glucuronopyranosyl)-D-mannose (III), isolated from the polysaccharides of 6 various gums from the trees of the genus Prunus, was described. The products of the hydrolysis of the methylated I, II, and III were identified by paper and gas chromatog. with Carbowax 6000 and neopentylglycol sebacate polyester as the stationary phases. The methanolysis of the fully methylated I and II produced a Me ester of methyl 2,3,4-tri-O-methyl-D-glucosiduronic acid (IV), methyl 2,3,5-tri-O-methyl-D-galactoside and methyl 2,3,4-tri-O-methyl-D-galactoside and methanolysis of III produced a Me ester of methyl 2,3,4-tri-O-methyl-D-glucosiduronic acid and methyl 3,4,6-tri-O-methyl-D-mannoside (V). V on chromatog. was overlapped by the second peak of IV but both were distinguishable.
