Abstract: The effect of the conditions of prepn. on the structure of isomeric forms of [Cu(sal)2(py)2] sal = (salicylate ion) was studied by x-ray powder patterns. The β-modification of [Cu(sal)2(py)2] is formed by the reaction of pyridine vapor with the fine, cryst. [Cu(sal)2(H2O)2].2H2O complex or with anhyd. Cu(sal)2. Similar powder patterns were obtained for the ppt. obtained from a soln. of pyridine and [Cu(sal)2(H2O)2].2H2O in EtOH The α-modification of [Cu(sal)2(py)2] was formed in an alc. soln. contg. Cu:pyridine in the ratio 1:6. The α-modification can be distinguished from β- by the evalution of the relative height of the diffraction max. Changes in the conditions of prepn., i.e. different concns. of pyridine or the solvent, cause the formation of intermediate products between the α- and β-modifications which can be characterized by the intensity of the diffraction patterns. α-[Cu(sal)2(py)2] is very sensitive to pressure and in 3 min. at 130 atm. can be changed to the β-modification.
