Oximation of cellulose

M. Pašteka

Abstract: There are several forms of aldehyde groups in cellulose oxidised by sodium periodate. Investigating the reaction rates of aldehyde group oximation at the constant pH value, qualitative and quantitative differentiation of these groups was carried out. The most reactive aldehyde groups were ascribed to free and hydrated aldehydes, respectively, those medium reactive to seven-membered cyclic hemiacetales or hemialdales and the not-reactive ones to intramolecular hemiacetales and hemiacetales with a five-membered ring, respectively.
