Abstract: cf. CA 63, 14119g. The systems CuSO4-H2O, CuSO4-NH3-H2O (A), CuSO4-NH3NH4SCN-H2O (B), CuSO4-NH3-(NH4)2CO3-H2O (C) and Cu-SO4-NH3-(NH4)2CO3-NH4SCN-H2O (D) (0.O5M solns.) were studied spectrophotometrically in the visible region. By the addn. of SCN-to A, NH3 mols. are substituted by SCN- and N atoms are bound in an inner Cu(II) complex, without changing the symmetry of the atoms. By the addn. of CO32- to A, there is a great tendency of CO32- to enter into the inner sphere of the Cu(II) complex by replacing NH3 mols. with the formation of a complex with a molar ratio Cu(II): CO32- equal or nearly equal to 1:1. The absorption curves of the system A-D indicate a complex with a heterogenous sphere, with the ligands SCN- and CO32- simultaneously bound on the central atom. The formation of trans-Cu(SCN)2(NH3)2 from these solns. is not dependent on the substitution reactions but on some other secondary factors.
