Physicochemical investigation of 2-hydroxyl-1-naphthaldehyde thiosemicarbazone

Abstract: The yellow color of 2-hydroxy-1-naphthaldehyde thiosemicarbazone (I) in the alk. range was studied by the spectrophotometric method. It was detd. that the shift to higher pH of the absorption max. spectra of I in the visible spectral region is caused by the dissocn. of the OH group in the o-position with the formation of an anion and a conjugated system in the side chain. The value of the dissocn. const. of the OH group in the o-position was detd. by the potentiometric method. By the measurement at 20° in 40% (vol.) Me2CO, the value was calcd.: K = 4.5 × 10-10. I reacts with the metal cations Co2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Ag+, and Hg2+ with the formation of colored asymmetric bicyclic inner complex compds. Some phys.-chem. properties of the agents can be applied in anal. chem.
