X-ray investigation of the temperature effect on the molecular structure of polypropylene

Abstract: X-ray diffraction was applied in the study of the effect of the temp. on the mol. structure of isotactic polypropylene (I) with a different mol. arrangement. The roentgenograms indicate that, at >75°, there is a change from a thermodynamically stable monoclinic arrangement. With thermal treatment of I with a thermodynamically stable monoclinic mol. arrangement up to 160°, there are no substantial changes in the mol. arrangement that can be detd. Above this temp., there is a gradual fusion of the polymer system, which is shown in the roentgenogram by the diffusion ring, characteristic of the disordered (amorphous) sphere.
