Abstract: A discontinuous selective fluidized oxidn. of Na2S to Na2SO3 in pelletized melts with Na2CO3, at 150° for 8 hrs., by air and H2O vapor in a one-stage fluidized reactor was developed. The reaction occurs in 2 steps: Na2S + O2 + 1/2 H2O = 1/2 Na2S2O3 + NaOH; 1/2 Na2S2O2 + NaOH + 1/2 O2 = Na2SO3 + 1/2 H2O. The third step occurring at higher temps. is very undesirable: Na2SO3 + 1/2 O2 = Na2SO4. Then, the exptl. data thus gained were utilized for the development of the continuous fluidized oxidn. of Na2S by using the diffusion coeffs. of Winterstein and Rose (Chem. Tech. (Berlin) 13, 10(1961)) used for liquids. By the application of the distribution and frequency equations of the retention time of the individual particles, the continuous oxidn. of Na2S was calcd. in 1-, 3-, and 5-stage fluidized reactors. The 3-stage operation with a 5-hr. retention time and the 5-stage operation with a 4-hr. retention time are the most suitable. The amt. of Na2 Sin the oxidized melts was decreased to ∼3.12% and the amt. of Na2SO3 was increased to as much as 61.27% in a 5-stage operation for 8 hrs. This process can be applied in the regeneration of the waste sulfite liquor contg. 50% Na2CO3 in the manuf. of wood cellulose.
