Hydrogenation of α,β-unsaturated aldehydes on Raney zinc catalysts

Abstract: The selectivity of the hydrogenation of α,β-unsatd. aldehydes (acrolein, crotonaldehyde, 2-ethyl-2-hexen-1-al, and 2-ethyl-2-hexen-1-al) on Raney Zn catalysts was studied by chromatography in the gaseous phase at atm. pressure, at 120°, 60-100°, and 60-120°, and in the liquid phase at H pressure of 200 atm. at temps. up to 170°. Under these conditions, only satd. aldehydes and alcs. are formed. In the liquid phase at 200 atm. and 90-150°, the dependence of the velocity const. on the amt. of Zn catalyst is linear. The activation energy of hydrogenation is 12.1 ± 2.8 kcal./mole. Raney Zn catalyst loses its activity fast when kept under H2O or when used in hydrogenation.
