Simultaneous determination of nickel(II) and cobalt(II) by spectrophotometry

Abstract: A spectrophotometry method of simultaneous determination of nickel and cobalt
in aqueous solution has been developed.
The method is based on colouring the respective cations by ammoniacal solution of
sodium hydrosulfite. It was applied mainly to the weight ratio of NiII CoII = 20 : 1
usual in industrial processing of nickel ores.
This method allows a rapid, simple and sufficiently accurate determination of Ni11
and CoII simultaneously, in the same solution, simply by changing the filters of the usual spectrophotometric apparatus. Most suitable for this purpose has prooved a photo-cell
spectrophotometer, with at least four colour filters.
The determination itself takes about one hour. The course of analysis being well arranged,
this method allows to determine the NiII and CoII contents of 25 — 30 samples in
about 8 hours.
