Abstract: The quant. detn. of 3,4-benzopyrene (I) by fluorescence spectroscopy at -197°, by adding a standard soln. of I to the analyzed sample, was described. A C6H6 ext. of the sample is analyzed by routine thin-layer chromatography on Al2O3. The fraction so prepd. contains, in addn. to I, other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons which cannot be sepd. It is evapd. and dissolved in chromatographically purified n-heptane. It is divided into 3 equal parts, to which is added 0.03, 0.06, and 0.10 γ of a standard soln. of I, so that there is ≤0.15 γ in 1 ml. The prepd. solns. are analyzed with fluorescence spectroscopy. A diagram of the exptl. device with the glass Dewar vessel and the cuvet with the sample are illustrated. Synthetic I mixts. contg. anthanthrene, perylene, 1,2-benzopyrene, 1,12-benzoperylene, 11,12-benzofluoranthrene, and exhausts from automobiles were analyzed. The results were in agreement with the results of the classical spectrophotometric method. The relative error was <8%.
