Oxidation and reduction of copper(II) complexes, resulting from ligand interaction

Abstract: The oxidn. and redn. changes of Cu(II) complexes resulting from ligand interaction were described. Because of the difference in the 2 ligands (I and II) in the trans position, σ-bonds (of lower polarity metal(II) → X) and donor π-bonds with the central atom are formed. There is an increased tendency of ligand I to be bound by the donor π-bond with the central atom. At the same time there is a tendency of ligand II to be bound by the σ-bond with the central atom, with the shift of the bond electrons towards the central atom. Thus, the ligand II may be oxidized (Cl- to Cl0) and the central atom reduced (Cu(II) to Cu(I)). These results can be applied in other complexes with a similar geometrical ligand arrangement in the sq., octahedral, tetragonal-pyramidal, and bipyramidal forms and with a corresponding electron structure of the valence cover of the central atom.
