Liquidus of the cryolyte corner of the Na3AlF6-Al2O3-Na2SO4 system

Abstract: The effect of Na2SO4 on the temp. of the primary crystn. of the system Na3AlF6-Al2O3 and on the soly. of Al2O3 in the cryolite was studied. A phase diagram of the system Na3AlF6-Na2SO4 and the liquidus of the cryolite corner of the system Na3AlF6.-Al2O3-Na2SO4 were constructed. It was detd. by thermal and x-ray phase analyses that at the temp. of the eutectic, crystn. is the boundary of the existence of the solid soln. 80% Na2SO4. In the phase diagram, a large area of solid solns. of Na2SO4 in the cryolyte and on the side of Na2SO4, a pure Na2SO4 was detd. Na2SO4 decreases the temp. of the primary crystn. in the cryolite and considerably decreases the soly. of Al2O3 in the melt.
