Abstract: The interaction of Cu2+ and C6H4(OH)CO2- in aq. solns. to form ([Cu(Sal)2(H2O)2].2H2O) (I) (HSal is salicylic acid) was described. At pH 4.0 in the system Cu2+ - Sal- - H2O, I is crystd., if Cu2+:Sal- is in the equiv. 1:2 or equimolar 1:1 ratio. The molar concns. of satd. aq. solns. of I are 2.46 × 10-2 at 20°, 3.33 × 10-2 at 30°, 4.69 × 10-2 at 40°, and 6.82 × 10-2 at 50°. I loses the bound H2O at room temp., if the H2O vapor pressure over the crystals is ≤1.3 mm. Complete dehydration is at 85-90° and is reversible. By spectrophotometric and paper-electrophoretic methods, it was detd. that at pH 2-6 and a component ratio of 1:1, this Cu(II) complex is formed in 2 steps: Cu2+ + Sal- ↹ [Cu(Sal)]+; [Cu(Sal)]+ + Sal- ↹ [Cu(Sal)2]. At pH 6-7, a chelate is formed: [Cu(Sal)]+ + H2O ↹ [Cu(C6H4OCO2)] + H3O+.
