Structure of diamagnetic dinuclear complexes of molybdenum(V)

Abstract: (NH4)2[Mo2(OH)2O2(OH)2Cl4] (I) and [Mo2O4(OH)2(H2O)4].4.5H2O (II) were sepd. from (MoOCl5)-- solns. in HCl (<4N). A weak paramagnetism was detected in I, characteristic of a ferromagnetic, while II is a diamagnetic. Paramagnetic resonance absorption exists in I at 84 and 293°K. M.O. calcns. disclose that I is paramagnetic because of the weakness of the Mo-Mo bond and II is diamagnetic because of its strength. The calcd. M.O. agree well with the absorption spectra of the compds.
