Abstract: Cinnamohydroxamic acid (I) and Fe(III), 1:1 form a H2O-sol. violet complex at pH 0.5-1.7. The reaction can be performed in a test tube (pD 5.7 where D = sensitivity), on a test plate (pD 4.7) and on filter paper (pD 4.7). The sensitivity can be increased by extg. the complex into amyl alc. with a change to a red color (pD 6.7). The reaction of I-Fe(III) with a large molar excess Fe(III) (1:500) was studied. Na, K, Ag, NH4, Ca, Ba, Sr, Mg, Zn, Hg(II), Cd(II), Mn(II), Fe(II), Bi(III), Ce(III), and Ti(IV) have no effect. A 100-fold amt. of Cu(II), Ni(II), or Co(II) interferes. SO42-, SO32-, NO3-, ClO4-, Cl-, Br-, BO2-, H2O2, OAc-, and tartrate have no effect. PO43- decreases the sensitivity. NO2- and V(V) require addn. of excess H2O2; MnO4- requires addnl. H2O2 and I; oxalate requires addnl. KMnO4 and H2O2. CN- and F- must be absent.
