New photometric procedure for the determination of the water in acetone

Abstract: A new photometric procedure was described for the detn. of H2O in Me2CO. It is based on the effect of water on the dissocn. of chloro-Cu(II) complexes, which is assocd. with an intense color. The dependence of the absorbance at 475 mμ on water concn. at the absorption band in the system CuCl2-NH4Cl-MeOH-Me2CO-He2O was detd. The amts. and ratio were: [Cu(II)] = 1.05.10-4M, [Cl-]: [Cu(II)] = 9.5. By this method a rapid detn. of up to 2.0% of H2O (by vol.) in acetone was possible, with an error of ±0.10%.
