Abstract: cf. CA 58, 12078h. An app. is described, consisting of a rotating disk with 3 slits, arranged radially at 120°, that alternate in front of the vertically placed slit of the spectrograph. By means of a generator, controlled by an electronic device (details given), and a.c., repeated are discharges can be generated with a frequency of 5 cycles/sec. The 20-msec. full period of each discharge can be synchronized with the length of the slit of the spectrograph and a separation of 1/2 msec. is achieved by this device. By using this app., it was possible to follow by photographic means, the gradual excitation of a sample of powd. CaCO3 to emission at 3630.7 A. and at 4 different zones on the arc axis. The dependence of the intensity of emission on the axial distance (from the anode to the cathode) indicates that the cation concn. follows a decreasing pattern of this direction in the 1st half-period, and that a max. cation concn. is observed during the 2nd half-period of the discharge at 2/3 of the distance. In all 4 zones, moreover, there was observed an identical course of the development of the max. intensity with time in both half periods; this phenomenon was independent of the polarity of the electrodes. These facts suggest that the powd. material flows from the electrodes during the 1st half-period of a discharge.
